Security Guidance for Defence Staff
In a recently aired interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD staff have been told not to discuss secret information while riding in China-made vehicles.
The minister stated that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that safety is a issue in every modern cars.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is not to plug MoD devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and sensible thing for everyone worried about safety.
When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
