Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
