One Piece Concludes a 27-Year Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in January, once the current storyline concludes, the animated series will go on a quarterly break until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will release two seasons every year for a cap of 26 episodes. The studio states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime had a half-year break that began in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the manga to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has managed to supply fans with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the news, this may result in one episode of the anime covering one chapter, with others instead covering more material or more to compensate for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course itself have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the art can vary widely between installments and the next. Today, series creation is structured in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each annually, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
