Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who come off popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing such treatments should be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
