Working Life of Income Inadequate for UK Employees to Enter Richest 10%, Report Says

According to recent research, the typical employee in the UK would require half a century of income to reach the financial standing of the richest 10% nationwide.

Widening Financial Divide Across Decades

This research reviewed net worth information from the Covid pandemic period and found that during the pre-financial crisis era, it would have required nearly four decades of average worker salary to enter the richest segment of the wealth distribution.

An economic expert part of the report stated: "Financial divides in Britain are currently so significant that a average worker saving all their earnings during their working years would remain unable to attain the highest level of the wealth ladder."

Quantifying the Financial Disparity

The study revealed that the disparity between the assets of the average person and a person belonging to the wealthiest decile was one million pounds in the mid-2000s, but had expanded to 1.3 million pounds in real terms by the pandemic years.

The economist added: "These disparities are particularly worrying as financial progression in Britain is limited – people that start life affluent tend to continue being rich, and conversely applies."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Although the financial disparity widening in specific figures, the portion of complete net worth in the UK owned by the richest households – known as "proportional economic disparity" – has been "broadly stable since the 1980s," as stated in the study.

Throughout these years, total wealth in the UK surged from thrice the gross domestic product, to almost 7.5 times.

Drivers of Wealth Inequality

Termed "automatic" gains, via growing real estate costs and variations in pension valuations, were the main drivers of the growing financial disparity since 2010, per the study.

These increases typically went to elderly homeowners, the research shows – worsening the generational financial disparity.

Age-Based Financial Divides

The median economic difference between individuals aged 30-34 and people aged 60-64 increased over twofold in real terms, from £135,000 in pre-financial crisis, to £310k.

Area-Based Disparities

Additionally, there were stark area-based disparities, with the median value of net worth in recent years reaching 290 thousand pounds in south-east England, where property prices have tended to rise rapidly, versus 110 thousand pounds in the northeastern region.

Health Crisis Years Consequences

During the pandemic, when countless laborers were protected by the public-funded employment protection, and Covid shutdowns curtailed consumption options, the statistics indicate countless homes were able to save, enhancing their financial standing.

Wealthier families fared much better, though. "The median home in the bottom income bracket saw their cash reserves grow by only eighty pounds during the COVID years (2019-20 to 2021-22), broadly the same as the 24 months before COVID. Conversely, the median home in the wealthiest fifth saw their available funds grow by 4,200 pounds," the analysis concludes.
